I have always loved this verse, and I have used it for years to walk around the small community I live in. Imagine my surprise when I saw a PBS tv-special that dealt specifically with it.

In a dig in 1979, some archeologists found an oddity in several sites they were excavating. The dig's leading man was a Christian, and before too long, he identified the oddity. On the sides of boulders and the bottom of cliffs, there were impressions of feet; large, small, single pairs and groupings; some sandled, some bare, all etched or pecked or painted and somehow impressed into the rock long, long before.

On subsequent digs, this man actually began looking for and tracking the ancient "footprints". When he began to map them, he found that they extended every place Moses had led the Israelites during the 40 years in the wilderness. Deep in valley gorges, high on rock bluffs, even impressed at the sites of old firepits, they found 40 years of footsteps, preserved for centuries for us to acknowledge and honor today.

Though the Israelites were living the 40 years of wandering as a consequence of their sin, still they put their belief--- their "steps" of faith --- in the faithfulness of God and in the surety of His scriptures.Every place their foot tread, every place they settled temporarily, every place they waited for God to fulfil His promise of a land just for them, they left the mark of their belief.

God is good. He is faithful to accomplish what He promises to accomplish. You can stand on that.
